A Kauai Boutique: Jane

by - 11/20/2016

Kauai is not the kind of place where you think of chic shops and little boutiques. That might be the curse of living in a major tourist destination where the major draw is nature, beaches and tropics. But there are locals here, and although we like beaches and nature as much as the next tourist, we have lives to live. Not everyone likes to accessorize with rattan and wicker and tropical prints a la The Golden Girls. City dwellers take for granted that they can stroll into a Target or a TJ Maxx and get chic home accents, and simple things like cute planners and notebooks. They don't think twice about having hip areas with shops of all sorts that they can peruse on their lunch break. All we can do is bite our bottom lips and look on in envy.

Boutiques have existed on Kauai, but they come and go, and have done so over the years, and continue to do so. Is it that Kauai is just not ready for chic living and style? No, that can't possibly be true. I refuse to believe it.

Erika Valente is a successful beauty blogger. But after 10 successful years, she decided to take a break from blogging to focus on the family business, Kalapaki Joe's. After focusing on that for a bit, she decided that she wanted to do something for herself once more. But not wanting to go back to the hectic life of blogging, she decided to open up a store.

Jane is a lifestyle boutique which incorporates things such as house plants, gardening, stationary, home accents, candles and even baby gifts, among other things. There is something for everyone here, both men and women. Things that Erika and her three daughters, Bree, Bailey and Janey (the namesake of the store) like, and hope that others like as well.

Right now, Jane is decked out for the holidays. The window boasts a cranberry - colored christmas tree void of any ornaments or lights, but although unconventional, still looks quite beautiful between a curtain of cascading yarn and baubles, which you can decorate your own tree with.

Erika puts things in her shop that she and her daughters would want for themselves, in their own homes.

Festive mango wood bowls and Christmas cards with a Hawaiian flair

Jane has a wide variety of stationary, such as planners, notebooks, address books, cards, writing utensils, and even cell phone cases.

Erika has a love of gardening, and you can find chic, fun gardening supplies at Jane, like pitchers, gloves, aprons, planters, and even plants themselves.

Everything in this store would make a great gift. It caters to both men and women, which is something no boutique has really done before here on Kauai (please, correct me if I'm wrong. My memory only goes back about 18 years). You can pick up a pencil case for your niece, a makeup bag for your sister, a water bottle for your brother who likes to stay fit, and an address book for your mom who has yet to figure out how a contact list on an iPhone works.

The home furnishings are adorable. They're fuzzy and embroidered and cozy, just the way I would want my home to be. That's right. I want a fuzzy home.

And can we talk about the baby things? It's such a breath of fresh air to be able to go some place other than Walmart or Kmart to get some adorable baby gifts that are unique and different (and adorable. Did I say adorable?).

There's also a wide selection of cards for any occasion.

Personally, I couldn't resist the one that says "Shut your face."

Jane also carries Lollia beauty items. I've personally never heard of Lollia, but Margot Elena has other brands, one of which being Tokyomilk, which I am definitely familiar with. Erika said she hopes to add more beauty items to the store soon, as her eldest daughters both work in the beauty industry.

I mean, quite honestly, you could bang out your whole christmas gift list in this store. It appeals to many different tastes, and has practical items that everyone could use in their lives. The prices range from, "Hey, that's pretty cheap" to "Um...I'll come back later," (not a scientific scale of measurement), but it's really hard walking in there and not coming out with at least a fun card.

If you want to do some holiday shopping at Jane (which you should), they will be having holiday hours, and will be open on Thanksgiving night from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, and on Black Friday there are a bunch of fun events planned throughout the day, as well as store specials! Follow Jane's Instagram, and sign up for their newsletter so you don't miss out on anything!
